Obituary of MARY CAREY
MARY CAREY (SEMENIUK)
On April 4, 2013 at Misericordia Health Centre Mary Carey, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 96 years. She is survived by daughter Catherine Wolosezky (husband Ed) of Winnipeg, sons Joseph Carey and his wife Hilary of Winnipeg, and Stan Carey, grandchildren Stan, Teresa, Michael and Marie, and great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Nolan. She was predeceased by infant son Joseph, husband Redmond Russell Carey, brothers Micky (Mitchell) and Walter (Bill) Simmons, and son-in-law Edward Wolosezky.
Mary was born on a farm near Glenella Manitoba in 1916. She and her parents and older brothers moved to Winnipeg in the 1920s and lived in the Brooklands area and eventually Bushnell Street off Logan Avenue. Mary left Daniel McIntyre High School after grade 11 and worked at the newly open Hudson’s Bay Co. department store at Portage and Memorial selling women’s perfumes and makeup. Mary married Redmond Russell Carey in 1941 at Immaculate Conception Church. Mary and Russell lived in Winnipeg’s West End for 37 years, raising three children and spending many summers at Winnipeg Beach and Beausejour at family cottages. Mary was an active member at St. Edward’s Church and later president of the parish Catholic Women’s League. She volunteered at the Health Sciences Centre Cancer Clinic for many years. After Russell’s death in 1978 Mary continued to live on Winnipeg Avenue and moved to Villa Nova on Wilkes Ave in 1993. Mary made many friends there, and enjoyed social activities and outings for the next 19 years. Mary moved to Misericordia Health Centre in July 2012.
