Obituary of WALTER EDMUND THIEDE
Walter Edmund Thiede
January 23, 1945 – June 13, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Thiede. Walter is predeceased by his parents Reinhardt and Katherine, wife Shirley, brother Richard and step brother Walter. Left to forever cherish his memory is his brother Edward (Zena), son Brian, nephews Ron, Brad, Kris, niece Janet, grandsons Adam and James, great nieces and nephews, and great grandson Declan. Walter was a unique individual. At the age of 79, he took his last breath with family at his side, listening to old time rock ‘n’ roll, which he loved.
Walter was born and raised in Winnipeg. The majority of his life was spent in the North End. In April 2023, he became a resident of Bergen Gardens Assisted Living Facility and will forever be remembered as an ‘OG’ resident, the third resident to be exact. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bergen Gardens named a corned beef sandwich after him. That was his go to order if he wasn’t keen on the menu options.
Walter’s first job was selling newspapers with his brothers; Richard and Edward. 50 papers a day for $1.00 split 3 ways. In his younger years, he was known to have painted a house or two and was an exceptional pitcher with the handle of ‘Lefty’.
Walter was a yardman at CP Rail for over 30 years, finally retiring in 2009. The phrase “doubling over” was not lost on Walter. If Walter wasn’t at the railway, he could be found enjoying a game of bingo at the local hall.
Walter made the most of a bus pass and knew where the best sales in the city were. He was often spotted walking in the North End sporting his signature look; a button up Hawaiian shirt regardless of the season, carrying shopping bags filled with the bargains of the day.
Walter was a man of few words and said more with his eyes and his Cheshire grin, unless it involved sports. Then he had something to say, especially involving the New York Yankees!
As Walter’s health diminished, extended family played a large part in the role of his care. It was a busy time but cherished nonetheless. Family would like to extend a special thanks for Dr. Vishal Kaushik and the staff at Bergen Gardens for the exemplary care bestowed upon Walter.
Rest in peace dear brother. You ran a good race. Till we meet again.
The celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Walter’s memory to Siloam Mission.
