WALTER ERNEST STEWART PROUTT

JULY 16, 1930 – AUGUST 17, 2024

Walter Ernest Stewart Proutt passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB at 94 years old.

Walter was born in Elphinstone, MB on July 16, 1930. Walter was raised in Winnipeg from the age of 10 years old. He was in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1946 – 1949. He worked for Winnipeg Hydro for 41 years. He was involved with Legion 141 baseball and also coached hockey for the Winnipeg Suns and the Jr. B North Winnipeg Satellites for many years. He loved spending time with his family at the cottage and would often suggest cribbage games, knowing we did not stand a chance.

Walter is lovingly remembered by his children; Brian, Louise (Jim), and Lynn (Craig). Grandchildren: Shane (Heather), Sheldon (Kimberly), and Ryan (Stacy). Great grandchildren: Brandon (Halle), Kyla, Allan, Cruz, SJ and Nash. Gigi was soon to be a great-great grandfather; with Baby Holgate expected to arrive in early October 2024. His foster brothers, Doug & Warren and he also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Walter was predeceased by his wife, Audrey Lillian Proutt (Leichbrecht); Mom, Muriel Florence Serle (Strathclair, MB) and Dad, Goldwyn Ernest Proutt (Ephinstone, MB); brothers, (Homer), Gene, Gordon and Earl; sisters, Noreen and Sara; paternal grandparents, Eliza Bone and James Proutt; maternal grandparents, Sarah Ann Serle and Walter D. Serle.

The family would like to thank the following: Grace Hospital, Health Sciences Centre and Misericordia Hospital staff. Brian Proutt, for dedicating his life to taking care of both of his parents; Walter and Audrey, as their live-in care provider. Louise Holgate, for also being a constant support to her dad and always going above and beyond to ensure her dad had what he needed. Jim Holgate, for also being so supportive of Walter, as well as supporting both Louise and Brian as they cared for Walter. Walter was a huge part of Brian, Louise and Jim’s lives and they will miss him more than we will ever know as they move forward and find their “new normal.”

Cremation has taken place and Walter did not want a formal funeral service. Instead, a Celebration of Life Service and burial will be held at a later date in Elphinstone, MB with Walter’s immediate family.
