Obituary of CHRYSE KELEKIS CASTRAN

CHRYSE KELEKIS CASTRAN The journey of life has concluded on May 27, 2016 for Chryse Kelekis Castran one day before her 102nd birthday. What a journey she had through an amazing panoply of change in these last 102 years. Born in Montreal on May 28th, 1914 the first born child of Chris and Magdalene Kelekis she was their first blessing. As first born she assumed a role that she carried her whole life as the 'oldest' sister to Fotina, Sophie, Evelyn, Isabel, Mary, Leo and Becky. Her journey was not without its difficult moments but one would never know that by the grace and charm that she had as a personality. She was a wonderful Aunt to Jimmy, Chrys, Melanie and Barbara and was always interested in their accomplishments and supportive of them. She was a petite but elegant woman never seen without her hair perfectly coiffed and dressed in the latest but tastiest fashion. She was a lady to her fingertips and always gracious and smiling. She was an avid reader and lover of music of all kinds..in fact she played the piano very well. She loved fine and beautiful things and shared that love with her family and friends. One of her favorite things to do was to meet her nieces and nephews as they grew to take them “downtown” for a Saturday excursion which might entail a movie or a concert followed by lunch at Picardy's ,the Honey Dew on Portage or her favorite Eatons Grill Room. This was a tradition that she carried over to the next generation when those children were of age. She worked with her sisters at Kelekis Restaurant for many years at 1100 Main Street. She was known for talking to young people in a most adult way offering advice and counsel when needed but she would not tolerate bad behavior and was known in her quiet way to eject those from the premises who would not follow her edict. Over the years she made many friends while working but two of these were lasting and true Dorothy Rempel was one and that friendship was long lasting and very deep and when Chryse was moved to West Park Manor Dorothy was a regular visitor. Her relationship with Arlyne Walsh was indeed like a mother and daughter. She loved Arlyne's vivacity and the two of them bonded from the time that Arlyne was very young and continued to deepen as years went by. Chryse leaves this earth with all good feelings for her next journey from her two surviving sisters Mary and Becky, her nephews and nieces Jim and Barbra Pappas, Chrys Pappas and Kaye Dunlop, Melanie Hall and Barbara Hall as well as their children and their partners. She is off to join her late husband Steve and all her siblings who are preparing a place for her at the table. Prayers will be on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Funeral Service will be on Thursday, June 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Shaftesbury and Grant. Burial in the family plot at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a gift to a charity of your choice is suggested.
