Obituary of EUGENE MITCHELL JACKSON SLEEMAN

Eugene (Sonny) Sleeman passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 17th, 2024 at Golden Door Personal Care home at the age of 78. 

Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Marcia Sleeman (Joseph); parents Ollie and Garnet Sleeman. 

Sonny will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Lonnie (Nathan); son Garnet, granddaughter, Calista (Omesh) and grandson, Brandon. 

Dad was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1945.  Dad was an avid bowler and from an early age learned the ins and outs of running a business at his parent’s business, Ollie’s Cafe, on Portage Avenue. He was a natural. 

Mom and dad married in 1971 and decided to move out to Pine Falls in 1978 to operate the Chicken Delight restaurant. Many years later, dad bought the restaurant which is still famously known as Sonny’s Chicken House. Dad sure had an impact on so many people in our little town, commonly known as the best boss ever.  Dad enjoyed cooking, coaching hockey, cards nights, trips to Vegas and all the shenanigans that happen when you run a business with a bunch of teenagers working for you. He was kind, giving and patient. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

Mom and dad moved back to Winnipeg shortly after their first granddaughter was born, 6 years later the joy of their grandson. Calista and Brandon brought their papa so much joy. He loved attending their soccer games and knew all the players (by name) on the opposite team they needed to look out for.  He was always encouraging them to do well in school and be good to people. He was the best papa. 

We thank all of the staff at Golden Door who have looked after dad for the last year. Special thanks to Mira, Aman and Hillary. You went the extra mile for dad and us. We are forever grateful and will never forget you.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.

Dad, you have had an impact on so many people throughout your life. We were all so blessed to have you as part of ours. You were, simply the best.
